Mission, Kansas: Small Town Feel With Outstanding Schools

The city of Mission, Kansas has a small town feel with just under 10,000 residents. The Johnson County community also offers some of the best schools in the state and country. It’s conveniently located off Interstate 35. It’s close to everything Kansas City has to offer, located less than 8 miles from downtown Kansas City.

Mission is in the heart of Johnson County and the Kansas city metro. As Mission Magazine writes, “It’s the center of everything.”

Shawnee Mission School District

Students attend the prestigious Shawnee Mission School District. It’s the third largest school district in Kansas serving many communities with 33 elementary schools, 5 middle schools, and 5 high schools. The schools consistently rank among the best in Missouri and the nation.

Students consistently earn top academic honors. In 2016, the district had 14 National Merit Finalists.

The Washington Post named Shawnee Mission High School among the top high schools in the country.

Recreation

Mission offers recreational opportunities for the whole family. There are 8 parks throughout the city, the Mission Family Aquatic Center, and Sylvester Powell, Jr. Community Center. The Community Center features a fitness center, pool, sauna, steam room, hot tub, exercise classes, basketball, racquetball, and handball courts.

On Saturday mornings, get your fresh vegetables and fruit at the seasonal farmers market. Mission Farm and Flower Market also features arts and crafts vendors.

The city also offers quaint retail shopping in downtown Mission. The city is upgrading its infrastructure and revitalizing the city. The improvements include pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, plantings, lighting, and amenities along Johnson Drive.

History

Mission once was a stop for wagons on the Santa Fe Trail.

While it’s called Mission today, it used to be Mission Hill Acres. In 1938, the Post Office recommended shortening the name.
